Challenge Wanaka 2012 – “the worlds most scenic Iron distance triathlon”

A competitor rides past Lake Hawea in the early morning light in postcard like conditions

This year I was commissioned by Marathon Photos to cover the Challenge Wanaka iron distance event on January 21, 2012. We all flew down on the Thursday prior and convoyed over to Wanaka from Queenstown airport. The first day we went out on course and checked locations around lake Wanaka on the bike section. The next day [...]

Editorial: Richter City Roller Derby, December 3, 2011

Richter City Roller Derby

I was there photographing the Richter City Roller Derby “The Fright before Xmas” December 3, 2011. The teams were Richter City All Stars vs Dead End Derby All Stars (CHCH). and Richter City Convicts vs Hellmilton Roller Gouls. When the Christchurch team rolled out to warm up, there was a 5.7 on the Richter scale [...]

Football Wellington vs Otago. Sunday October 23, 2011.

Otago's Matt Joy gets elevation on Tyson Holmes to head the ball, ASB Football, Wellington v Otago, David Farrington Park, Wellington, Sunday October 23, 2011

I was commissioned to shoot the ASB Football game, Wellington v Otago, David Farrington Park, Wellington, Sunday October 23, 2011. This is the first soccer game I have photographed since coming back to New Zealand. Lots of photographers love shooting the game. While it is seriously fast – it does lend itself to getting good [...]

Your Weekend Magazine article September 10, 2011

MT_2011922_002

This is how the article ran in Your Weekend, a supplement that went into the Dominion Post on Saturday. The story is about Anna’s weekend “tri” at the Winter Games. A combination of running, mountain biking and skiing. It was great to be a part of the event and capture her day. I especially liked [...]

Wipeout in Breaker Bay, Wellington

wipe out photo in Breaker Bay

While waiting for a portrait shoot for the winners of the Dowse Art Gallery competition, I noticed a couple of guys trying their luck surfing Breaker Bay. Its a break that is unforgiving and super shallow. The guys managed a couple of waves, then started to get tired and fall off on a few. They [...]

Turning adversity into opportunity

Scot KNELLER (Australia) winner, followed by Anton GRIMUS (Australia) finals of the Ski Cross, Winter Games, Cadrona Ski Field, Friday August 26, 2011. Photo: Mark Tantrum

On Friday, the weather packed in and was fully overcast. The Ski Cross event at the winter games was the main event, it looked like it it was going to be a dull day indeed. When I got to the media center, one of the German reporters casually mentioned the snowboarders were having a training [...]

Inspiration from former soldiers turned athletes

Ralph Green (USA), Alpine Slalom Adaptive, Winter Games, Coronet Peak, Thursday August 25, 2011. Photo: Mark Tantrum

It interested me in the Slalom Adaptive event how many British and American soldiers there were that had suffered injuries while serving in Afganistan and Iraq, that then have applied “adapted” to become Paralympic athletes. It’s for sure inspiring to see the drive and determination that it takes to reach the levels these athletes have [...]

Snowboarders are nice people too – Big Air event 24 August 2011

Antoine Truchon (from Canada) watches Tyler Nicholson (Canada) go down the entrance to the Big Air, Snowboard Big Air, Winter Games, Cadrona Ski Field, Wednesday August 24, 2011. Photo: Mark Tantrum

I was talking with NZ Snowboard champ Shelly Gotleb at an industry party in Wanaka following the Big Air event, part of the Winter Games. We were talking about the culture that exists in snowboarder culture and how it is really quite supportive and nurturing, which I think runs counter to the stereotypes. I was [...]

Behind the scenes at the Winter Games 2011: Episode 1

Screen shot 2011-09-01 at 6.59.28 PM

Here is the first installment of my behind the scenes coverage of the Winter Games in Queenstown and Wanaka: Episode 1, getting ready to leave Wellington for the South Island and the Winter Games on Tuesday August 23, 2011.

Windsurfing at Lyall Bay

Hanging upside down from a wave jump. I liked the body position and height the sailor got off this one. A great thing making the most of the full on storm.

When I came home, there were a group of windsurfers across the street setting up to go out at Lyall Bay. I decided to use the time I would have been shooting for a client to shoot for myself.

I discovered Parkour this weekend

Rowan fully clears the rail through the air. While calculated, this stil is risky business!

I took a break while shooting the @Heart Plunge event to get some lunch. I went to the Frank Kits Underground Market and had a delicious burger from the Cheeky Pipi Cafe stand. On the way back up the steps to the Frank Kits Park above the market, I met Rowan Worthy who is a [...]

Xterra Rotorua Festival 2011

The leader of the Xterra Richard Ussher coming through the trail running section

This year I was lucky enough to get picked to be on the Marathon Photos team to travel to the Xterra Festival in Rotorua. It is the largest offroad multi-sport event in New Zealand, and the largest Xterra event in the world. My challenge was to get shots in the forest of runners. I brought [...]

Porirua Grand Traverse

Two runners coming around the cliff. I like how the shaddows are still present in this one.

Today, I shot photos of the Porirua Grand Traverse for Marathon Photos. I shot the starting area with the Mountain Bikers heading off the blocks. There were about 500 or so that I saw. I then had time to go get breakfast at Denny’s before heading over to the coast to cover the run. This [...]

2011 Karapoti Classic mountain bike race

A different view from the other side of the same corner. A very scenic spot! 2011 Karapoti Classic Mountain Bike Race.

This year, while photographing for Marathon Photos, I was assigned to shoot from a corner in the Akatarawa Gorge. It was deep in the bush with low light levels. The brief was to get more action based images- that showed a bit of movement and used off camera strobe lighting to create a dynamic image. [...]

Getting ready for the Coast to Coast

Multisport - Speights Coast to Coast, Friday 12 February 2010

This Thursday, I am traveling to the South Island of New Zealand for the 2011 Speights Coast to Coast, the 29th Annual event which spans the width of the county as a multi-sport endurance race. This year is being dubbed “the year of the veteran” with race organizer Robin Judkins and local Coast hero Steve [...]

The Wellington Mountain bike Club 2010 Wellington Downhill series

Top: from section M5 of the trail called the "Root Shoot", bottom right: section F2 before, the "Clay Shoot", bottom right: getting some air along ridge before the start line.

On Sunday, I photographed the absolutely full on event that is the Downhill Series. These guys are absolutely committed and dedicated speed demons with amazing skills. I was in awe watching them ride worse than goat track conditions in sticky muddy conditions. They traversed over rocks, tree roots, logs, rock ledges, low hanging branches, dodging [...]

Wellington Regional Tree Climbing Competition 2nd October 2010 Botanic Gardens

Drew Bristow runs along a branch during the Work Challenge.

The competition was a lot of fun to photograph. I worked alongside Phil Reid from the Dominion Post for some of the time shooting action sequence photos of the competitors doing a range of challenges like the Secured Footlock, which they scale a vertical rope. Probably my favorite was the Work Climb which was related [...]

Personal projects- getting off the ground

An example of where the location matched what I had in mind for a shot- the curve of the road just worked out beautifully as a spot to try this image. The rider is on the wrong side of the road, so we will have to be carefull on the day!

In a few different conversations I have had recently, we have discussed the importance of doing personal work in all aspects of career advancement. This has been both conversations with photographers and a marketing professional who has agreed to help advise me with my career. The general theme in all of these conversations has been [...]

Surfing sequence

On the Weekend, I was dog sitting and was taking the dog for a walk. We went for a big walk along the Eastern Walkway. On the way back I saw a surfer suiting up and heading out at a remote location on Wellington’s south coast. On the way back up the hill, I saw [...]
