New Years Eve in Wellington 2014-15
I photographed the 2014-15 New Years celebrations for Wellington City Council which hosted an event at Frank Kitts Lagoon. The event was produced by Chameleon Event Management. The main challenge was the weather which was gale force northerlies with heavy rain.
Wellington Events team members look out at the bleak conditions early in the evening when the rain was strongest. Despite the conditions there were many hearty families who braved the conditions and came out regardless.
As time went on, the weather lifted and the kids who were there were treated to some great entertainment without heavy crowds to contend with.
A travelling family from overseas got to interact with the mirror man (and lady). This lucky guy got to borrow mirror man’s ukulele and play a tune. It was really cool seeing a bronze coloured sunset shine through the clouds and reward those that came out.
Once the weather lifted around 10pm, the crowds started filing in and the areas around the lagoon filled up steadily. There was great entertainment from The Hollywoods, Highly Flammable and Orchestra Wellington before the fireworks started after the countdown.
A view of the lagoon with crowds gathering and lighting all in full swing. It’s times like these where you are proud to be a Wellingtonian.
