Hey Guys

On Thursday, following the New Zealand Post Book Awards, there was a “meet the authors” event at Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand. The winning authors who spoke were:

New Zealand Post Book of the Year and General Non-fiction Award & The Peoples Choice Award winner

Blue Smoke: The Lost Dawn of New Zealand Popular Music 1918-1964
by Chris Bourke
(Auckland University Press)

Fiction Award winner:

The Hut Builder
by Laurence Fearnley
(Penguin Group (NZ)

Poetry Award winner

The Mirror of Simple Annihilated Souls
by Kate Camp
(Victoria University Press)

Illustrated Non-fiction Award winner

The Passing World: The Passage of Life: John Hovell and the Art of Kowhaiwhai
by Damian Skinner
(Rim Books)

A cool moment for me was before the event started, one attendee arrived early and was patiently seated waiting. Meanwhile, a group of holiday program kids surrounded her as they listened to their Te Papa guide. Kinda cool to see the two elements of society mixing like that.; Also cool was how the reader kept focused on her book despite the potentially distracting, loud kids that didn’t seem to phase her!

Booksellers "€˜Meet the Winners"€™ Author Event. Wellington, Te Papa (on the Marae) Thursday, 28 July, 12.15-1.45pm.

The MC, Kim Hill was again magical- managing a wonderful, candid conversation that travelled around topics and issues – getting great insights into the authors work and what makes them tick as people.

Parting Shot- Chris Bourke responds to a crowd members laugh while he tells a story about his book Blue Smoke.
