New Zealanders enjoyed early success at the World Championships in Wellington. They were won by Carl Van Roon, Luke Thompson and Jeremy Hanna. I was assigned to shoot Luke Thompson and Carl Van Roon of them for http://www.nzfighters.com/. I was also assigned to cover Carolina Dillen who did not medal today but did an impressive effort in the finals. I arrived with moments to spare as Luke Thompson was about to begin his performance at the individual power event.
Following the event, there was the waiting game to see if other competitors could beat his score and take away his gold medal. After it was announced he had retained the world championship, I arranged to get this portrait of him.
Next up I found Carolina Dillen in the sparing event. I got this reflective shot of her in between rounds. I made an effort to find elements alongside peak action that helped tell the story of the competitors and their sport.
The last competitor I covered was overall Reining overall World Champ Carl Van Roon. At the time of writing it is still to early to know if he has retained the overall title, but the event I covered- the Specialty Event, he gained another gold medal world title.
Here is a portrait of him following the gold medal performance. Being a model, Luke knew what to do in front of the camera, it made my job that much easier.
