NZI Sevens Parade through the streets of Wellington

Today I photographed the Athletes and supporting cheer teams parade through the streets of Wellington, down Lampton Quay to Civic Square. It was a major spectacle with lots of inner city workers and the last of the school holiday families lining the streets to check out the spectacle.

I was shooting on behalf of the Wellington City Council, so lots of my shots were taken prior to the event itself. The cheer teams tried out and were awarded the spots. Some were workmates, some flatmates or friends that decided to give it a go. It was also good to see corporate teams getting into the spirit and representing one of the countries. Its one of the things I love about Wellington, is all the people who aren’t afraid to put their creativity on their sleeve and just get into it! The challenge of course was the sheer number of people and floats to try to cover- with New Zealand at the tail end. I ended up walking against the parade in order to see it all in time. Then I stuck with NZ through to the end. I was dehydrated and a little sun burned at the end, good reminder to dress for all weather here in this little city of ours…
