This Thursday, I am traveling to the South Island of New Zealand for the 2011 Speights Coast to Coast, the 29th Annual event which spans the width of the county as a multi-sport endurance race. This year is being dubbed “the year of the veteran” with race organizer Robin Judkins and local Coast hero Steve Gurney returning to compete in the event.

This year is my second to cover the event- this time, I am working for 3 outlets. Firstly, I am shooting on daily deadline for Photosport – these photos will be made available for the press to purchase and use around the world. It is a big responsibility and lots of pressure to deliver results. The other outlets I am working for are New Zealand Fitness Magazine and NEXT magazines. These are more considered edits- with less immediate time pressure, but none the less have expectations of their own.

In preparation, I have calendared time to work on preparation this year. Here is part 1 on what I am doing to get ready for the big trip, the gear checklist.

Gear Checklist:

  • Rain Jacket
  • Rain Pants (just bought these on a background shoot for NEXT magazine while passing the outlet stores in Otaki)
  • 2 days change of clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Mobile phone (with 2 Degrees and Telecom sim cards for best coverage on the two coasts)
  • Laptop, with lots of spare space on hard drive
  • External Hard Drive
  • External Image Tank (hard drive with download interface independent of laptop software etc).
  • Cords, chargers and gaffer tape.
  • Nikon D3 and D300 camera bodies (the D300 allows for 1.5x magnification on long lenses)
  • 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses.
  • SB800 flash
  • Monopod (need to replace the one I just retired through excessive wear and water damage)
  • Thinktank Photo Rain Cover for camera (new purchase for trip- lessons from the rain last year!)
  • Drivers license, plane tickets, cash, notebooks, pens
  • Voice recorder and video camera for multi media recording
