Roller Derby mayhem, I am a total fan of this sport now…

On Saturday I was lucky enough to be allowed access to photograph the Richter City Shakedown Stop Drop and Roll Roller Derby. It was held at the TSB Arena on Queens Wharf here in Wellington. I arrived early and set up, getting some good time to do test shots. The idea was to get some flash and blur. Where you shoot with a slower shutter speed and use the flash to freeze the action.

The only problem with that tactic is that there are lot of “misses” – add that the fact that the action is so fast paced and the likelihood of success is greatly reduced. I managed to fail spectacularly a lot of the time. However, I also managed some shots that I think were hits out of the ballpark so to speak. What I was trying to do was get images that did not look like everyone elses. I did of course shoot without flash with my Nikon D3 cranked all the way up to ISO 5000 and got great results. Still my favorites are the ones where I was pushing myself to get something more creative…
