Location Scout – San Francisco Presidio

This is the location scout from the Main Post Chapel and San Francisco Film center in the Presidio. First, I went to visit with the representative with the Main Post Chapel because their opening hours are 10am-2pm only. I got there at noon, and checked the perimeter.

Its a very cute spot with good shelter from the prevailing winds, there is an outlook toward San Francisco Bay. The Chapel is set on the hill which makes for the apportunity to get a really good look at Alcatraz and the water. The Chapel is interfaith, which means that any religious background can get married there. I am looking forward to shooting there. The history of it being a military base, which dates back to Spaniard days and the 1770’s for the US military.

The interior of the Chapel is beautiful. It has a simple elegance in the decor. I really like the low level lighting used in there. I was a little concerned that it was too low. But when talking with the staff- we tried out some different options and the result is something that will work well. In the small tour I received, I was shown the brides dressing room which is well appointed and will photograph well. The last interior highlight is the mural which features peacetime activities of the army. Not everyone’s cup of tea for bridal portraits, but could be cool if done right. I went around the building and check out all the options that were available.

There is good parking right next to the building with spillover parking in a lot close by. If you would like to learn more about the Chapel, click here

The reception is at the San Francisco Film Center, I did a quick walk around then had lunch at the Cafe there. Then I met with the manager of the facility and got shown around the space. The main space is really cool. It has a New York studio look to it with the hard wood floors, white walls and spotlights in the ceiling.

Being a former military base, the buildings have a majestic quality to them. I like the arches at the balcony space in the front, which is where the cocktail hour’s happen. The lawn out the front is also visually strong, with Palm trees lining the streets (one street over from the Film Center). One of the well known photographers that shoots a lot at the Film Center is Darcy Weddings. There are some great images there that depict how the space looks during a wedding.

One space recommended to me, which I want to try shooting is the Eucalyptus grove in the Presidio. It is only a short drive away, and looks out of this world, almost surreal. This was a quick grab shot while driving through. With a couple walking on one of the many paths, it would look even more stunning.
