Volleyball shoot #2 – Thursday night 4/2/09

I went with a flash guns a blazing, I took 2 strobes with pocket wizards, and attached up in the rafters of the high school gymnasium. The first thing that happened is one of the coaches saw, and asked “your not going to use those during the game are you?” I replied that I was planning on it- just like at the Shark Tank, the local National Hockey League stadium that has strobes mounted in the ceiling. He said that it should be fine, so long as it did not interfere with the players.

During warm up, I excitedly tested out the rig. One of the things that I noticed was that it was not really necessary to have the extra light in this gym and shooting at ISO 2500. All the strobes (at 1/64th power) did were to slow me down in my frame rate. After the discussion with the coach, I was not keen to shoot rapid bursts of flash in fear of messing up the players and really getting yelled at. The other factor was that I would have to go to 1/250th shutter speed or slower, which was a pain, I preferred to have it up around 1/320th or 1/500th to capture the action. So quickly, I realized that with the higher ISO and a reasonably well lit gym- the only reason for using the strobes would be creative choices- having a strongly lit subject matter with dramatic lighting could be a useful tool for some purposes. For my photojournalist needs- I realized that I am best to stick with the available light.

Here are the selects from the shoot:

A good location seems to be the end of the gym by the back base line

Another baseline shot with a powerful spike in process

Shooting volleyball through the net can be good- focus is hard to get right however- I usually focus on the feet before they jump

I try always to find something different than the known good shots- these dive shots are a really chance to get- mostly the are over before you can react. In this case I was lucky to predict the timing and was pointing in the right direction.
