Saratoga vs Lynbrook boys Varsity Volleyball match 4-1-09

I attended the match and shot for the Saratoga News and Cupertino Courier. The match ended up going to 4 games which meant I shot for almost 2 hours. It meant I had time for plenty of shots- I rattled off about 950 frames during the course of the games. I used the new Nikon D700 with battery grip to get 8 frames per second. Initially I shot with the 80-200mm lens, on a monopod from the stands and behind the score keepers desk. Then I moved to the front row of the stands and shot with the 17-55mm wide angle lens, zoomed out to 55mm to avoid vignetting. Finally I ended up putting the 85mm fixed focal length and shot with that with some success.

The D700 was invaluable in getting ISO2500 shots with clean noise levels. I did however think that having a couple of strobes mounted at 3/4 along each length of the court (so not to get in the eyes of the players) might add a little pop and fill light to the images. I am shooting another volleyball game tonight, so that will be a good place to test this theory.

I will bring gaffers tape and bungy cords to affix the flash units to the top of the stands or walls and use Pocket Wizard’s to trigger off the units. There is no need for the units on a technical level- there is enough light to get usable shots with the new high ISO performance body, rather I am wanting to see if I can improve on the aesthetics of the final shot by adding to the light that is there. Once bonus of the new camera is that I will need on a slight amount of power from the flashes to add to the shot, given the extreme sensitivity being deployed.

Will post agian and let you know how it goes!
