Bat Mitzvah event photography

I shot this Bat Mitzvah party on November 15, 2008 at the Jewish Community Center in Los Gatos. Mainly this was an event coverage shoot, but I did recognize that the birthday girl would likely appreciate some studio shots. We took the traveling studio set up, a lightweight portable backdrop and lighting kit that I custom made for events like this. I will make sure to blog about the lighting setup in the future for those interested.

I event managed to convince her brother in to get a shot in the studio together- it took a little convincing, but worth it as they look great together.

The main reason for being there of course is to get event photos- I like to get posed spontaneous portaits when covering an event.

I set up some lights next to the dance floor on stands to get some candid shots with the faces lit in the changing lighting. I think this is a good technique in wedding receptions and other events with a dance floor that can be too dark with the changing lighting- a little flash fills the shaddows. I use cross lighting that gives you two sides to shoot from.
